My Why

I was 21 when my grandmother died at home under hospice care.

She was fierce. She had already beaten cancer more than once. Pancreatic cancer was the one that won.

I was there. I didn't know what I was doing, I wasn't a nurse yet, I just knew I could not be anywhere else. The two hospice nurses who cared for her in those final days watched me with her. Before they left, they told me I was kind and compassionate. That I had a warm heart and a calming energy. That I should be a nurse.

Nobody had ever said that to me before and it landed.

The path was anything but easy. I ended up in Texas, earned my associates degree, and worked full time while completing my bachelor's and master's degrees, all while working in a stroke unit on nights and then an ICU. I didn't come from a family that handed things to me. I built this the hard way, one shift at a time.

After over 15 years at the bedside and now as a practicing Nurse Practitioner, I still think about those two women. What they saw in me that night became the work I have done every day since.

That hasn't changed and it never will.
